Class 1

Within our class we are always looking for exciting new ways to learn and love to explore both indoors and outdoors on a daily basis.  The children enjoy learning through their play and with their friends.  There are opportunities for quiet reflective play as well as creative play in the art studio, mark making opportunities and lots of counting and number games.

The doors are open to the outdoor learning environment every day and the children love to dig in the large sandpit, build structures and dens and develop their large motor skills on the balance bikes.

Children are invited to join Class One the term after their third birthday and remain in the class until the end of their reception year.

Nursery provision is available between 8.45am and 3.25pm each day.

We enjoy lots of exciting activities in Class One including weekly outdoor adventures during our ‘Welly Wednesday’ walks in the woods, the school garden or further afield.

Within the Early Years Unit we follow the guidance of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.  This curriculum is divided into seven areas of learning.

The Prime areas being;

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language.

And the four specific areas:

  • Mathematics
  • Literacy
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design.

Not only do we focus on what the children are learning but how they are learning.  These processes are very important and are known as the Characteristics of Effective Learning.

Further information on the Early Years Foundation Stage can be found here.

The children are encouraged to read at home each evening as well as reading in class at least three times per week.  The children in Class One also love their daily ‘Buddy Reading Time’ with Class Four, sharing and discussing books with the older children.

Each Friday the reception children also receive a short piece of homework to consolidate learning from the week.

The children are also very excited each weekend to discover who will be taking our class bear Martin home for his next adventure.
